Observations of Active Galactic Nuclei with Ground-Based Cherenkov Telescopes
نویسنده
چکیده
Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) allow us to observe Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) in the 100 GeV to 20 TeV energy range with high sensitivity. The TeV γ-ray observations of the nine blazars detected so far in this energy range reveal rapid flux and spectral variability on time scales of several hours, sometimes even on time scales of a few minutes. While simple synchrotron-Compton models can explain the observed non-thermal emission, alternative models which involve high-energy protons are not yet ruled out. After reviewing the status of the major IACT experiments, we describe some recent observational results and their astrophysical implications. We conclude with a discussion of possible avenues for future research.

Observation of selected SNRs with the MAGIC Cherenkov Telescope
Supernova Remnants (SNRs) are believed to be the acceleration sites of galactic cosmic rays. As such they are expected to produce Very High Energy (VHE) gamma-rays through hadronic and/or electromagnetic scenarios, hence they are natural targets for observations with ground-based Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs). Currently, VHE emission has been detected from several SNRs, makin...
متن کاملMultiwavelength observations of Mkn 421 in a flaring state in Jan / Feb 2001 with HEGRA and RXTE
The blazar type active galaxy Mkn 421 was observed during an active phase in January and February 2001 with the X-ray satellite RXTE and with the ground-based HEGRA system of TeV Cherenkov telescopes. Observations were coordinated to allow for simultaneous data taking. Both instruments observed time-dependent variations of the flux and the spectral shape in X-rays and TeV γ-rays. Variability an...
متن کاملTeV γ-ray Astronomy in the new Millennium
The field of TeV gamma-ray astronomy is reviewed with emphasis on its relation to the origin of cosmic rays. The discovery of TeV photons from supernova remnants and active galaxies has provided the first direct observational link between specific astrophysical objects and particle production at the TeV scale. TeV γ-ray observations constrain the high end of the electromagnetic spectrum, a regi...
متن کاملIndirect Dark Matter Searches with the MAGIC Telescopes
MAGIC is a ground-based system of two, 17 m diameter Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes located in the Canary island of La Palma. MAGIC-I has been operational since 2004 and it already achieved the lowest energy threshold among the current generation of Cherenkov Telescopes. In 2009 it was joined by MAGIC-II, and together, in the stereoscopic mode, they allow for observations of substanti...
متن کاملSTACEE Observations of Active Galactic Nuclei and Other Sources
We describe recent observations and future plans for the Solar Tower Atmospheric Cherenkov Effect Experiment (STACEE) located at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, New Mexico. STACEE is a ground-based experiment for detecting atmospheric Cherenkov light from rays in the energy range 50 to 500 GeV. We describe recent observations of active galactic nuclei such as Mrk 501, and also outl...
